I have always been interested in Japanese culture to some extent at various point in my life. Last spring I went on a vacation to Japan and it was a somewhat life-changing experience. Being in Japan was like being in a perpetually altered-state– everyday I woke up feeling euphoric. The exuberance of Tokyo overwhelmed me in the best possible way. I returned to the US  determined to revisit Japan with an at least somewhat proficient knowledge of the language.
I am excited to learn enough of the language in this course to be able to get around Japan on my own (though I don't expect to be able to engage in deep conversation with the natives). So far I have found the everyday quizzes challenging– simply for the fact that they are everyday.
